He showed his driver's license and Harvard identification card, but was handcuffed and taken into police custody for several hours last Thursday, they said./blockquotebr /br /I bet he did exhibit "loud and tumultuous behavior." I likely would too. Actually, I wouldn't. But I don't work for Harvard. And my mother taught me how black men are to address the police.br /br /Fellow Harvard a href="http://www.people.fas.harvard.edu/~counter/biography.html"professor Allen Counter/a has had similar encounters with Police:br /br /blockquote[S. Allen] Counter has faced a similar situation himself. The well-known neuroscience professor, who is also black, was stopped by two Harvard police officers in 2004 after being mistaken for a robbery suspect as he crossed Harvard Yard. They threatened to arrest him when he could not produce identification.br /br /"This is very disturbing that this could happen to anyone, and not just to a person of such distinction," Counter said. "He was just shocked that this had happened, at 12:44 in the afternoon, in broad daylight. It brings up the question of whether black males are being targeted by Cambridge police for harassment."/blockquotebr /br /From the Harvard Crimson:a href="http://www.thecrimson.com/article.aspx?ref=528584"Renowned Af-Am Professor Gates Arrested for Disorderly Conduct/abr /br /Here is a copy of a href="http://www.boston.com/news/local/breaking_news/gates_incident_report_redacted.pdf"THE POLICE REPORT/abr /br /From Wonkette:a href="http://wonkette.com/409970/famous-harvard-intellectual-arrested-in-connection-with-attempting-to-enter-his-own-home#more-409970"Famous Harvard Intellectual Arrested In Connection With Attempting To Enter His House/abr /br /From the Boston Globe:a href="http://www.boston.com/news/local/breaking_news/2009/07/harvard.html"Harvard professor Gates arrested at Cambridge home/abr /br /And, what would an arrest story be without the proverbial mugshot:br /centerimg src="http://www.jackandjillpolitics.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/skipgatesmugshot.jpg" alt="skipgatesmugshot" title="skipgatesmugshot" width="500" height="500" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-13355" //centerbr /br /br /As Percy Sutton once said,br /br /em" If you wake up and forget that you are Black, by the time 5 pm rolls around, someone would have reminded you." /emdiv class="blogger-post-footer"img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/21083673-2559067286608177059?l=mirroronamerica.blogspot.com'//div
